LSI news flash

17-02-2008 19:30 | 1 reaction(s) | add reply
Time for some LSI news! In the last couple of months I’ve been working on two things, a new server park and an upgrade of the LSI search engine.

New servers

Let’s start with the new servers. LSI runs on a large number of servers; file servers, database servers, image servers, backup servers, you name it, they are all member of the club. All these servers have been replaced with brand new more powerful servers.

With more power on board I was able to install new systems that make the site run even more smoothly then it already did. Perhaps you note a quicker response of the site here and there.

Search engine updated

The second change is one more visible for the visitor of the site, the search engine upgrade.

better results

The search method has been improved. The search engine now tries to understand what you’re looking for. It combines search trends statistics with your search request to present you more acurate results.

presentation

The presentation itself has also been changed. The search results can be sorted at any column by a simple click on the column header.

autocomplete

Another new feature is the autocomplete. It has been suggested by a lot people. While entering your search terms, LSI predicts on-the-fly what you want to type. The best matching results popup in just a fraction of a second in a box which you can select with your mouse or the arrow-keys. The autocomplete is enabled for the artist, album, song, soundtrack and movie search.

exact search

The last new feature is the exact search. If you enclose your search terms within quotes (“), the engine looks for a more exact search.

removed items

I removed the advanced search from the site, which allowed you to search on multiple fields at the same time, for example artistname and songname. It turned out that the advanced search wasn’t used a lot. The “quick” search apparently already worked well enough so that no further filtering was needed. And with this new search method that presents even better results, I did not see a reason to keep the advanced search.

Also removed, because it wasn’t used much either, is the option to search through the forum posts. People are more likely to search through forum titles instead of forum posts.

If you have tips, comments or tips about the new search engine, let me know!

Ok, end of the news flash!

Adios,
Ray
